Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls

The 2017 the High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) held in July at the UN headquarters under the theme of “Eradicating poverty and promoting prosperity in a changing world” focused inter alia on the review of the Sustainable Development Goal No. 5 (SDG 5) “Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls”.

During the session dedicated to SDG 5, the Scientific and Technological Community Major Group – co-organized by International Council for Science (ICSU), International Social Science Council (ISSC) and the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) – delivered a statement on key activities conducted by the scientific community towards the attainment of SDG 5. Among the activities mentioned in the plenary session there was the project “A Global Approach to the Gender Gap in Mathematical and Natural Sciences: How to Measure It, How to Reduce It?”. The statement can be downloaded here.

The HLPF also featured many side events such as the UNESCO-UN Women-WIPO side event on “Science–technology innovation: Closing the gender gap to meet the SDGs”, and the one organized by ICSU to present the new “Guide to SDG Interactions: From Science to Implementation”.
